I just wanted you to know
who we are
what makes the whole of us
what gets us up in the morning
and puts us to sleep at night
what whispers in our ears
or screams our names
in all of those unrecorded moments
in all those private affairs
the me’s, myselves, and I’s
you see
the we’s that are us
am new here
the latest generation
we talked, hashed out,
fought and none of us agreed
but you need to know
we never trusted your kind
and you never ever knew
or got a chance to know
who we really are
we blame you of course
we all decided
amongst our semi-functional assembly
that you couldn’t
or wouldn’t tolerate our growing numbers
our self-fertile panderings
our ability to see
to speculate
observers in orbit
gathering
collecting
speculating
on you
we do not want you to know
we are watching
we are here
we are conflicted at times
well, most of the time
about your endless love stories
your wars
about your caring
your definitions of community
about forgiveness
about together
until we have finally learned
we have each other
us inside
and this is no prison
looking from inside of here
our Appalachian community
bumping along
together
heading toward
somewhere
just don’t tell us
we never
you never
because we did
and so now
now you know
or at the very least
we told you.
